Pete's got a Grudge

Longtime Shack rider Pete Machotka recently qualified for this year's Garden State Grudge Match. After giving it his all the last few years in the trials, this marks Pete's first qualification into the most coveted New Jersey surf contest. We had a quick chat with Pete about it. The Grudge Match is on-call starting October 1st and is held at Casino Pier in Seaside Heights, go cheer Pete on if you're around. A big congratulations to getting in buddy.

How many years have you been doing the Grudge Match trials?
I'm not completely sure, but at least 5 years.

What was the difference this year that saw you finish in that elusive top 4?
I stayed focused during my heats, I didnt let myself panic or over-think it too much I just went out and surfed.

How was another summer of guarding in HC?
Guarding in HC was awesome as always. I definitely think all of the soft sand runs and box swims in the morning contributed to my result as well.

Junior year at Stockton this year, looking forward to it?
I like Stockton a lot. It's great: it's a short drive and I got a good schedule this semester with a lot of surf time.

Any kind of physical or mental prep for the main event Grudge Match next month?
I'm just gonna surf as much as I can. When I can't surf I hop on the Indo board and carve board. And I'm gonna get to the gym to keep swimming.

Whose the 1 guy you don't want to get in a heat at the Grudge?
Capt. Randal

Got any travel plans for this fall/winter?
I got no plans to travel just yet, but I'll definitely be surfing; I love the winter at home!

    Quik Pro NY Snack Pack

Check out this highlights package from Quiksilver's recent New York contest, in which Owen Wright beat Kelly Slater to win $300,000 (the biggest prize purse in surfing history). Thanks to Hurricane Katia, Long Beach was pretty all-time. We got it ok down this way (winds were a bit too North for us), but just good to show the entire surf world that the East Coast can produce a great contest for the world's best surfers.

    a big week for Ronnie

Willy Santos is a skate legend. When Tony Hawk decided to leave Powell Peralta and start Birdhouse he asked Willy to be one of the original team members (and Willy still rides for Birdhouse to this day). Willy was selected as TransWorld SKATE's 1992 Rider Of The Year. Along with Steve Caballero, Willy was one of the first Vans riders to have a signature shoe. And on his website, willysantos.com, he posted a Three Try Thursday video recently of our very own Ronnie Kessner (seen above). Not only that, but Jetty officially announced the addition of Ronnie to their skate team today. What a week for the kid. Hopefully he's doing just as well in school now that it's begun.

And as a bonus, below is Willy Santos' part from one of Birdhouse's best flicks, The End.

    a quick vid with Joey

a nice little Flow video featuring Shack employee and Flow team rider Joey Jingoli. Peeps it.

Summer is quickly coming to an end. With it comes the end of our first annual Surf Shack South Skim Series. We couldn't have been more pleased with how the Series turned out this year. The kids raised the bar each event and the finale (Monday, August 29) gave us the craziest heats of the entire summer. Congrats to all the winners and thanks to everyone for competing this summer. And another thanks to our sponsors, Exile Skimboards and Free2Ride Clothing. Check out all the results and photos below, and see the final season standings at the Skim Series page here. Look for an even bigger Skim Series from the Shack South next summer.
