By now the entire world has seen the incredible footage of Mick Fanning fighting off a great white during his heat at J-bay. Equally as incredible is this Stab magazine interview with former world tour surfer Derek Hynd, who paddled out just an hour after Fanning was attacked. Hynd's unorthodox board selection and astute surfing wisdom make this one of my favorite interviews ever. (CLICK THE LINK!!)

Whether you're an experienced surfer, or someone just learning to stand up, Catch Surf boards are all about fun in any conditions. In honor of the many small summer swells ahead of us, here's a clip of a few pro skimmers ripping their Catch Surf boards.

There are some people who reach a certain point and become happy with where they are at. And then there are some that are indescribably hungry to become better at whatever it is they are doing.

The latter describes our very own Kyle Calandra and his skimboarding ventures. Since the end of last summer he has been a madman in the skim by taking out his first Pro victory, heading down with the Exile crew to compete in the Cabo event earlier this summer, taking 2nd in Pro in Belmar, and recently heading down to the OBX event.

In between all of that his focus has been filming—the hits just keep coming from him. You give him a bump in the shorebreak and he's going to get a highly usable clip (as evidenced in the above edit from our friend David "Scrubby" Jensen).

We just want to say how proud we are of our Dingus. It started way back when when he was just a baby Dingus getting the floors of Surf Shack all sandy. He is doing us proud and we are excited whenever a new edit comes our way from him or when he's prepping for a contest. Congratulations on your first Professional edit Dingus and keep up the good work. We know there is lots more to come from you and your skimming.

It's been quite a while since a solid skim movie has been released. But the folks at MOV recently put out Drive, and well, we're pretty excited to see how it came out.

Carvers aren't skateboards, they are surfboards for the asphalt and we've finally got them available at both Surf Shack South and The Shack Board Shop. With their patented C7 front swinging truck, it allows the front truck to have a lateral thrust (or that rail to rail feel of gliding on water). The back truck acts more like a pivot, allowing for actual pumping motions like you're surfing. You will not find a skateboard out there today that resembles the feeling of surfing more than a Carver. We've also got a demo model available to try out in Beach Haven if you'd like to see for yourself just how incredible these things are...

2013 Surf Shack South Skim Camps

This year we'll once again be running skim camps. They will be for ages 5 & up and any skill level. We keep a 4 to 1 student to instructor ratio, so kids will easily be getting personalized instruction from some of the Island's best skimboarders (Kyle Calandra and Brian Carey). The camp dates are above and will run from 8am-10am on Taylor Avenue in Beach Haven. The cost is $40/day or $75/two days.

Aside from these camps we also offer private lessons anytime. So stop on in the shop in Beach Haven and get signed up.

Landfall: The Eyes Of Sandy opens this weekend

Wednesday night we were fortunate enough to get to pre-screen Jetty's first big film, Landfall: The Eyes Of Sandy at The Surflight Theater down here in Beach Haven. It's a great tale of our Long Beach Island community and how we were affected by Hurricane Sandy and how we have come together to thrive once again. It was an honor to be a part of the whole experience and we urge you to go check it out this weekend.

Here are both the trailers for the film. Landfall will be showing this Sunday at the LBI Arts Foundation in Loveladies at 3pm and 6pm. If you can't make either of those don't worry because it'll be screening at The Surflight Theater all summer long. You won't want to miss this film, plus ticket proceeds go directly back to the United Rebuild fund.

it's starting to feel like summer is here

After a very long and arduous winter and spring our Surf Shack South location in Bay Village is very near being back open for business. We're going to have a whole new look in there but will still have the same great products we've always offered (and even some new brands too!). Stop on in this weekend and say hi if you're around, as we'll be completing the finishing touches for next week's holiday and grand re-opening.

And if you're in Bay Village this weekend make sure you check out the LBI Wine Fest going on. Always a great kick off to the summer. There's also a few other superb events happening this weekend if you are down on the Island:

• 1st Annual LBI Classic Fish Fry Benefit for Sandy Relief (benefits ALO as well)
• Frank Panzone Jr. Memorial Cruisin For A Cure

Sure, you may be asking yourself, "What's going on with Surf Shack South? All we hear about anymore is the awesome Shack Board Shop over in Manahawkin now."

Well fear not, because there are potential things that are in the works for us being open in a new Beach Haven location come Memorial Day weekend. Barring any unseen circumstances, we will be back—while also maintaining The Shack Board Shop as a permanent, year-round skate shop (something that has been severely absent in the Manahawkin area for many years). Stay tuned for more details when we know.

And in case you forgot, Surf Shack South is the place for all your skimboard needs. Just ask long-time Shack rider Kyle Calandra, as seen in the above footy courtesy Mr. David aka Scrubby Jensen. Kyle's been doing this all winter long, while also getting spat out of barrels on a surfboard and being crowned the first ever King Of The Shack (along with Kyle McCormick).

David Gonzalez is Thrasher Magazine's 2012 Skater Of The Year. They informed in him one of the greatest ways ever to inform somebody that they won something major (check the link). And check out his full part in Thrasher's "Possessed To Skate" here.

The Shack Board Shop

Well, the last week has been a complete blur. We decided it was time to fill everyone in on our new endeavor, The Shack Board Shop.

That's it above, coming quickly along. Since we are currently displaced due to Hurricane Sandy, we've moved shop over to the mainland, the Manahawkin Mart to be exact. For those that don't know, the Mart is located on Bay Avenue across from Retro Fitness, right near Fireplaces Plus! and Thunderbird Lanes bowling alley. We're in unit 13, the southwest corner of the building that faces the parking lot. We've also got a killer Mexican food spot right on the other side of us (La Bamba) that we've been enjoying every day! Our exact address in case you have trouble finding it is 657 East Bay Avenue Manahawkin, NJ.

All that being said, while Bay Village is being repaired this winter and spring, we'll be here in Manahawkin. The Shack Board Shop is going to be a full-service skate shop. It's been far too long that the Manahawkin area has had any kind of skate shop and while we're there that's what we're going to do.

We've been working really hard to get things fully running and the store completely stocked with all the great products you need for the holidays. As of right now, we're aiming to be up and running and open for business later this week and will be announcing details of our Black & White Friday Opening Weekend Sale by mid-week. Much more to come on that, as product is arriving every day and we managed to save some merchandise from Shack South.

If you happen to drive by or just wanna stop and say hi, please do. And stay tuned for some big big things we're going to be doing there this winter, as we're chock full of ideas and good things on the horizon. We're going to do our best to keep The Shack philosophy alive in this new undertaking.

the fall Philly Am goes down this Saturday at Providence Skate Spot in West Chester, PA. always one of the best contests in the northeast. check it out.

the holding period for Jetty's 6th annual Clam Jam also begins this weekend. the bracket is above (and can also be seen here). not looking like too much swell on the horizon for this weekend, but who knows, something may pop up on the charts. a few super-talented pairings this year (Bill/Brendan Willem, Royce Weber/Randy Townsend, Ryan Kelly/Conor Willem, and more) are gonna make things pretty exciting to watch, as always. when the event does run it will be held at Hudson Avenue in Harvey Cedars this year.
