Liberate Yourself premiere and Liberation Q n A

In case you haven't heard, we're premiering Liberation Skateboards first film, "Liberate Yourself" at the shop this Friday, July 1st at 8pm. We're going to be doing a bunch of giveaways and skate discounts as well. Brower had a quick chat with Liberation founder Kelsey Arcoleo to get some insight into the brand and flick.

When was Liberation founded?
Liberation Skateboards was founded in 2008 and operated on a smaller scale compared to what its on now throughout Freehold, my hometown, upon its start up. I was only in high school working a part time job for minimum wage and not knowing as many people as I do now when it started.

What is the inspiration behind it?
My passion for skateboarding is the motion of every move I make with the brand. I've been skating for over a decade now and I wanted to make sure I found a way to incorporate it in my future when I'm unable to participate in it like I am now, so this is my attempt at making it a longer lasting relationship, although it always will have a special place in my heart. Every skater knows that once you're a skater, you're forever a skater.

How long was "Liberate Yourself" in the making?
A lot of people are surprised when I answer this question, but I'm certainly not seeing that I was the one going through everything making the video happen. A bit over two years is what it took to finish the project and that is for numerous reasons. There were many factors that were stumbled upon like conflicting schedules with the team, getting kicked out of spots, breaking boards and cameras, getting injured, and putting the time into production to make sure everything was picture perfect to my liking.

What are some of the things that make East Coast skating, and more specifically Jersey skating, so unique?
I'm not trying to be too much of a downer of where I'm from, but the terrain here is very rugged due to the weather and traffic. The word unique comes into play because of the payoff one gets from being an East Coast skater, which is the ability to skate almost virtually anything since in most cases, at least from what I've seen in my travels to other places, anything is better than what we're provided with here when it comes to skateboarding.

What’s been the best part about the premieres so far?
There are so many good things about premiering "Liberate Yourself". The sense of accomplishment after finishing it is real nice and seeing the video roll through from start to end on the screens makes those feelings certain. Not only that, but I also get to look back on everything that happened during the filming process and share stories with the audience.

How important is it having a good deck underneath your feet?

Many people, including myself, have their specific preferences—usually those of good quality, for what they ride, so I make sure that Liberation Skateboards provides only the best product on the market. Construction, performance, reliability, graphics, and all around satisfaction with the products we provide are what we pay attention to most.

What is the worst thing about skateboarding right now?

There are plenty of things faking what skateboarding really is and it's upsetting, but I want to make sure that I stay in the industry for the reason I entered it, to be one of the few to lead others in the right direction, which is that of not selling out, scamming people, and giving wrong perspectives on our culture. To me it's about keeping it real by staying true to the roots of skateboarding without conforming.

The best thing about it?

The progression of skating and the slow, but steady, acceptance of it are great things about it. The best part of it, which has always been since the beginning of it, is the fun of it once all of the nonsense is pushed to the side and it's just the rider and the board.
